Inspired by my deselection work as a Reference Graduate Assistant at Pratt Libraries, I am curious about shared resources between Pratt Libraries and other institutions. For 3rd party access, Pratt Libraries checks  Hathitrust Digital Library for digital versions of print resources . When verifying 3rd party access, we consider if an item is fully viewable online and fully downloadable. Therefore, I ask:

  • How many resources within Pratt’s print collection are viewable in Hathitrust without full-download restrictions?
  • And out of the shared items, which institutions provided the digital copies to Hathitrust?

Results demonstrate a successful method for efficient collection evaluation via code scripts and illuminates potential avenues for resource sharing.

Ellery Bruns

Reference Graduate Assistant at Pratt Institute
Hello! My name is Ellery Bruns (she/her). I am a Master of Library and Information Science candidate at the Pratt Institute, who aims to work in collection development, reference, and instruction. My background in intersectional feminism, abolition, and carceral studies informs my passion for building community and identifying gaps in research and collections. My research interests align in the intersections of collection development, critical librarianship, the Romance genre, and database design. In 2024, I published an article titled, "Archival Silences and Avenues to Address Them: A Literature Review," in The Serials Librarian. Currently, I am researching best practices in collection deselection for datasets and digital lending. As an information professional, I ground my praxis of librarianship in empathy, criticalities, and a firm belief in building equitable, inclusive, and accessible collections.
