For the class ‘Projects in IXD’, we worked with Bjørn Ihler – the co-founder of a European NGO called Khalifa Ihler Institute. He wanted us to design the web experience of hatemap.io – a website that tracks incidents of hate crime and violence across the globe. He envisioned hatemap.io to be a reliable information hub that helps researchers dig deep into complex data, and aid affected communities in any way possible. In short, he wanted to build a site that brings together communities of researchers and affected people to make a meaningful impact in the world.
To carry out this project, we had to understand the UX of Data visualisations, and the UX of content writing. We needed to understand how to make data visualisations more accessible, while understanding how to be sensitive to information being put up on the screen.
After numerous interviews with research professionals and non-profit workers, sessions of brainstorming and feedback, and hours spent on Figma, we designed a website that reflects the clients needs as closely as possible.
