Many born-digital photography archives include a wide variety of file formats, but most archival literature focuses on only JPEGs and TIFFs. However, many original files are proprietary RAW formats. There is little guidance on best practices for these formats, making it difficult to know how to preserve RAW images for the future. As part of the NYPL Digital Archives and Preservation Fellowship, this presentation will be informed by NYPL’s Digital Preservation practices to explore the metadata behind RAW formats, and the impacts of converting to other formats.
