Community groups and activists often create and maintain archives as a grassroots effort to keep and define their own stories while remaining independent from mainstream institutional collections. As an introductory overview, this project presents some of the unique challenges that non-traditional, independent archives face in managing born-digital archival content. The solutions for sustainable digital community archives are grounded in resource-sharing and robust collaboration between and among community groups, activists, and institutional archives, while maintaining the intention and autonomy of the community collection.
