Abbey Bender will present the online archive for the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) Oral History Project created by students in LIS 668 (Moving Image/Sound Archives). The DOB was the first women’s LGBT social and political organization in the United States. The students expanded on work done by previous classes by strategically redesigning the Herstories website. Students digitized audio and video tapes in class and presented them on this site. The class was very small and two students each worked on curatorial, metadata, and design and technology. The students spent the semester improving the site’s infrastructure; creating exhibits, collections, and other features; and creating metadata. The end result is a truly collaborative site that presents, in a user-friendly way, an area of history that has too often been silenced. The class is proud to have made the fascinating stories of the DOB available for public perusal.
