The goal of this project was to create book enclosures, which are usually made to protect fine and rare books. For our boxes students used only archival, acid free materials, such as paper, boards, hand-made marbled paper, and cloth. These boxes not only support and preserve books, they become unique pieces of art. Students were able to make their own design and use their artistic vision to create unique enclosures. An archival box provides a protective barrier from dust, dirt, and light. Contaminants in the air are often acidic which can cause damage to papers and books. Fading from sunlight is permanent. A sturdy archival box supports its contents and minimizes damage. Archival supply stores can provide many sizes and styles of acid free, pH neutral boxes. However, archival materials do not always come in sizes to fit the standard containers, so boxes are created in the lab.
