The MET Origins is an interactive 3D web experience that maps over 6,000 artifacts from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, to their geographic places of origin. Using the MET’s open collection data, the project plots each artifact to its place of origin on a 3D globe, letting users filter by department, medium, and time period, from 3000 BC to 2025 AD. Beyond geography, it also traces the journey each artifact took to reach the MET in New York, turning the collection into a global atlas of movement, trade, and cultural exchange, a new way to explore the museum, not by gallery, but by origin.
