Fostering a Library: A Case Study at NYC Administration for Children’s Services

Abstract: The Administration for Children’s Services, better known as the foster care system in New York City, reached out to Pratt students in the fall of 2017 to help improve the library at its Children’s Center in Manhattan. This facility is home to children ages 0-21 as they await placement in foster homes; they may stay there for as little as two days and as long as several months. Through weeding, reorganizing, gathering donations, and recommending new purchases, a plan is now in place for the library to truly serve this community – as long as ACS is able to secure a staff person to maintain the space and collection.

Excerpt: This presentation reviews our work to improve the quality and functionality of the library at the Children’s Center, a temporary residence run by the Administration for Children’s Services.
