Social justice is a relatively new discourse being undertaken in the library and information science field and within curricula in various LIS graduate programs. As public and, often, publicly funded, institutions libraries hold immense standing in the communities they serve and librarians are often the face of the institution and the gatekeepers of information. With rapidly changing demographics, public and academic libraries will be increasingly serving a non-white clientele. As such it is an imperative that not only librarians employed in these institutions reflect that, but also that graduate schools in library and information science recruit a diverse student body. Furthermore, the practice of recording and disseminating information that falls on the shoulders of the librarian must be reformed in order to account for race, gender and sexual orientation.
