This project presents a series of data visualizations created based on fanfiction data from Archive of Our Own (AO3), focusing on the fandom community behind HBO Max’s pirate-themed series, “Our Flag Means Death” as a case study. This is an on-going project that explores the interplay between the creative output of the show’s fans and the canonical content presented by the series, both during and after its broadcast.
By analyzing fanfiction data and mapping the creative space of transformative works for a given fandom, the project hopes to generate insights on how a creative community can emerge and evolve in tandem with a piece of popular media.
