I discuss the attitude of the OpenAI company toward copyright law and posit what it means for libraries to license its products. In doing so I hope to provide the scaffolding to encourage librarians to consider: If academic libraries are expected to adhere to copyright law and teach it to others, what are the effects of utilizing OpenAI products in our libraries and on our campuses?

Annalise Domenighini is a reference and instruction librarian at Bronx Community College. Their research and academic areas of interest revolve around information literacy, community engagement, and the ethical implications of technologies as they are applied in the classroom. Their praxis is influenced by critical pedagogy, information as a human right, patron privacy and intellectual freedom. Prior to librarianship, Annalise spent over ten years in media, writing for and overseeing the social media accounts of culture magazines like VICE, NYLON, and The Fader. This first-hand experience with the impermanence of Web 2.0 has lead them to work with organizations that prioritize preserving born-digital resources.
