Introduction

New York City’s coronavirus summer didn’t stop noisy pandemic parties from blossoming in every borough, according to 311 complaints. In this year alone there have been over 440,226 complaints to 311 about noise and parties, data shows. In 2018 and 2019 there have been 229,057 and 259,636 complaints about loud music respectively. There is no surprise that this year’s pandemic would bring an increase to the noise complaints due to the fact that the lockdown has many New York residents staying home and finding ways to stay entertained.

In this report we will explore in detail the areas in new york that is making the most noise. We will examine each Borough and find specifically the areas that is causing the most ruckus. In this report I excluded Staten Island due to its small number of complaints compared to the rest of the Boroughs.

Process

The process start by getting the data on 311 noise complaints from https://opendata.cityofnewyork.us/. The site contains filters which allowed me to filter and precisely noise complaints from Loud Music. Because this was a really large data set i only picked the datas from January 2018 to December 2020. During this search I learned excel has a hard time processing data sets larger than 1,048,576. In excel I glanced over the data to make sure the data was clean with no errors. In Tableau I noticed there were numbers that seems to large so I inspected the data in excel. There were 2 addresses that had many repeated complaints. At this point in the project I had to exclude those addresses under tableau. I proceeded to inspect all the other zip codes under each Borough in case I may have missed any repeated noise complaints.

Findings

The data below only shows this years noise complaints from loud music but the chart above shows 2018 and 2019 so we can see the large increase of of complaints this year. All of the data is new as of December 7, 2020.

While the graphs were really simple the graphs help show which zipcodes had the most noise complaints from loud music this year. What would be interesting to see in the next few years is if the number will increase if the city remains to be in lock down in 2021.
