Maps can be inspiring, insightful or manipulative. They can capture not only practical knowledge but can provide historical, social, economic or political information. All maps are an effort to visualize the world around us into digestible bits.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Inspired by the <i>Hydrographic Map of Ocean Motion<\/i> by Athanasius Kircher from <i>An Interactive Timeline of the Most Iconic Infographics<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/infowetrust.com\/scroll\/\">http:\/\/infowetrust.com\/scroll\/<\/a>), I decided to do some research into the earliest forms of mapping, particularly those with a worldview. <span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">\u00a0Viewing world maps\u00a0you can ascertain the author&#8217;s knowledge and familiarity of the world along with how they see their place in it.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>Choosing some key examples, my timeline gives a glimpse into the evolution of world maps.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Process<\/h2>\n<div><strong>Data Collection<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">I found articles that listed collections of key and influential maps through history. \u00a0<\/span><i style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">Mapping Through the Ages: The History of Cartography<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\"> (<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gislounge.com\/mapping-through-the-ages\/\">https:\/\/www.gislounge.com\/mapping-through-the-ages\/<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">) had good examples of evolving world maps. \u00a0A UK Mail article,\u00a0<\/span><i style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">Ten of the greatest: Maps that changed the world<\/i><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">\u00a0(<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/home\/moslive\/article-1272921\/Ten-greatest-maps-changed-world.html\">http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/home\/moslive\/article-1272921\/Ten-greatest-maps-changed-world.html<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1.0625rem\">),\u00a0covered maps that were highly influential in history. \u00a0This research also led me to an article on the recent discovery of the oldest maps that used stars to gauge relation to the greater world (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/871930.stm\">http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/871930.stm<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Using Evernote, I collected and organized my research in one place.\u00a0 This enabled me to easily drop it into the Google Spreadsheet provided by TimelineJS.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_9720\" 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My Timeline JS Visualization<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Future Considerations<\/h2>\n<p>The subject I chose\u00a0was too vast to do justice with a dozen screens. In hindsight, I would have chosen a smaller subset, such as star\u00a0maps or sociological maps, rather than attempting to do an overview of key developments in world maps.\u00a0 I also chose not to include political or propaganda\u00a0maps although there are several world maps of this nature.\u00a0 I felt it would have changed the tone of the timeline and begged more explanation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>TimelineJS is a great tool for providing a few snapshots of information along a timeline. It is easy\u00a0to learn and creates a good looking product but it is challenging to get much deeper with the material. I did not have much luck with formatting the body paragraph or adding any URLs.
