Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched as an initiative\nof the Pratt Center for Community Development, Made in NYC works to support a\nvibrant manufacturing community within the five boroughs of New York City. Made\nin NYC offers their member companies workshops ranging from photography shoots\nto marketing and promotional lessons from expert fellows from a variety of\nbackgrounds. The member companies of Made in NYC come from many different\nsectors, with the predominant industries focusing their manufacturing on\nfashion, food & beverage, and\/or home & interiors. This dashboard of\nvisualizations, accessed publically in interactive form at http:\/\/bit.ly\/MINYC<\/a> demonstrates the\ndistribution of Made in NYC\u2019s member companies throughout New York City, and\nallows visitors to query by sector\/industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was inspired by the NYC Hazard Mitigation Projects map<\/a>\nreleased by the Mayor\u2019s Office for Recovery and Resiliency as part of One NYC.\nThe comprehensive and interactive map allows New Yorkers to search within the\ntoolbar by mitigation action type, the scheduled phase, as well as the kind of\nproject they are looking for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These various map layers\nmake it easy for visitors to the site to learn about various issues of climate\nresiliency and what the city is working to accomplish across areas of emergency\nmanagement, infrastructural improvement projects, as well as public education\nand awareness building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a project assistant for\nMade in NYC I have access to our organization\u2019s dashboard of member companies,\nand pulled this data from our website\u2019s backend. Once it was downloaded as a\nCSV file, I cleaned it up and removed additional data that was less pertinent\nto what I aimed to visualize, and then geocoded addresses to create lat\/long\ncoordinates for each business using Google Sheets. Initially importing this\ndata into Carto, I realized (with the help of Professor Sula) that this data\nwould be best demonstrated with Tableau. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With each business mapped\nout by their given address, the geocoded lat\/long coordinates, and with the\nborough column allowing visualizations denoted by borough boundary, I was able\nto plot each Made in NYC member company as a point on the map and then color\nthese points by industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a project assistant of\nMade in NYC, I was not surprised by the distribution of our member companies,\neither across industry or geographical location, as it is something that I am\nfamiliar with from my work. However, I think there are very telling patterns\nthrough this map, such as the high prevalence of fashion businesses in midtown\nManhattan and in northern Brooklyn, and the larger amount of food &\nbeverage and home &interior businesses throughout Brooklyn and Queens. It\nalso is very clear to Made in NYC that we need more representation in the Bronx\nand Staten Island, and we are working hard to support manufacturing in these\nboroughs too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future Directions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In future studies, I hope to work with the company\nthat handles web development for the Made in NYC Initiative to connect the\nGoogle Sheet I populated this data with live data from our website\u2019s backend.\nIf I am able to connect our backend, with new companies being added nearly\ndaily, with a live Google Sheet that populates this graphic, it will be\nregularly updated and reflect the organization\u2019s current composition of member\ncompanies. I am very impressed with Tableau Public as a data visualization tool\nand look forward to using it more in my work. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
