The Mirrored Bookshelf is a compilation of resources for teen black girls built around the window/mirror concept of books: a window story is one that shows you a different world for you to look out at, and a mirror story is one where you can see parts of yourself in it. So often when black girls get recommendations for “mirror” stories, they’re heavy classics like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Bluest Eye, The Color Purple, etc. What if you want to be able to see yourself in a story that’s not filled with strife? Where are the kinds of media that would interest a 16 or 17 year old black girl today? What would she find useful and empowering without feeling weighted down? This blog aims to collect contemporary books, films, television, and other media that have relatable characters and themes for contemporary black teens.
