{"id":6613,"date":"2018-05-09T23:45:52","date_gmt":"2018-05-09T23:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentwork.prattsi.org\/infoshow\/?p=6613"},"modified":"2018-05-11T12:33:42","modified_gmt":"2018-05-11T12:33:42","slug":"supporting-software-preservation-at-nypl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentwork.prattsi.org\/infoshow\/2018\/supporting-software-preservation-at-nypl","title":{"rendered":"Supporting Software Preservation @ NYPL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In the fall of 2017,\u00a0Pratt Institute\u2019s School of Information began a partnership with the New York Public Library in the form of a two-semester practicum-internship which supports a Pratt MSLIS student in gaining practical experience toward the archiving and long-term preservation of born-digital materials.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Read more about this fellowship at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypl.org\/voices\/blogs\/blog-channels\/special-collections\">SpecialCollections.txt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This spring I worked with Digital Archivist Susan Malsbury, in the Archives Unit of Special Collections, to tackle issues surrounding software preservation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are several collections held by the Library for the Performing Arts at NYPL that contain unique file formats, which are dependent on their native software to be read, and whose preservation and access needs require special attention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My project was centered around file formats produced by the proprietary Lightwright software.
