DINOMITE!

Description:

This project was undertaken in my second semester, as an individual assignment creating and managing digital object metadata. The class was asked to build a website that cataloged and described an assortment of digital items of a similar subject, which was chosen at our discretion. I decided to focus on a lifelong interest of mine, dinosaurs, highlighting a series of objects from museum collections, as well as examples of pop culture interpretations of the prehistoric creatures. My site can be explored further, here

My Role:

Working independently, I researched and retrieved a total of 10 digital objects, associating relevant metadata and curating the collection into appropriate categories.

Methods:

Drawing mostly from the Library of Congress Online Catalog, I assembled my digital collection using Omeka S, with the aid and instruction of Professors Jennifer Cwiok and Iris Lee, attributing a consistent set of data to each object, including such elements as Creator, Date, Medium, Subject and Rights.

Rationale:

This project exemplifies the effective description and management of digital information and collections to increase the inclusivity, accessibility, and sustainability of cultural heritage. By presenting a well-curated collection of digital objects that appeals to both casual and committed audiences of the subject matter, I believe the website produced as a result of this particular assignment demonstrates well the Museum Information Management and Technologies Student Learning Outcome.
