This period is dominated by\u00a0stories that\u00a0spread rapidly and are deemed &#8220;fake news&#8221; by various sources, most prominently Pizzagate and\u00a0investigations into Russian influence in the election. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/local\/wp\/2016\/12\/04\/d-c-police-respond-to-report-of-a-man-with-a-gun-at-comet-ping-pong-restaurant\/?utm_term=.e9d715036f46\">Washington Post<\/a>, &#8220;the man told police he had come to the restaurant to &#8216;self-investigate&#8217; a false election-related conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton that spread online during her presidential campaign.&#8221; A months-long Reddit conspiracy came to light, which revolved around the belief\u00a0that the Clintons were running a a child sex ring from the back room of the restaurant. That same day day,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/09\/politics\/obama-orders-review-into-russian-hacking-of-2016-election\/\">President Obama directs<\/a>\u00a0the intelligence community to conduct a review of what happened during the election, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/obama-orders-review-of-russian-hacking-during-presidential-campaign\/2016\/12\/09\/31d6b300-be2a-11e6-94ac-3d324840106c_story.html?utm_term=.ae4028349fa6\">Trump&#8217;s transition team responds<\/a>\u00a0by claiming &#8220;The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It\u2019s now time to move on and \u2018Make America Great Again.\u2019\u201d The following day, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/807588632877998081\">Donald Trump tweets about &#8220;fake news&#8221; for the first time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns regarding the Russian influence on the election can be seen in the topics assigned to news articles by LexisNexis. Within the top twenty-five topics from this period, LexisNexis has identified &#8220;us presidential candidates 2016&#8221; (#3), &#8220;campaigns &amp; elections&#8221; (#6), \u00a0&#8220;elections&#8221; (#8), &#8220;us presidential elections&#8221; (#10), &#8220;heads of government elections&#8221; (#11), &#8220;investigations&#8221;(18),\u00a0and &#8220;russian federation&#8221; (#22). Of particular interest are &#8220;investigations&#8221; and &#8220;russian federation&#8221;, which had previously not been so popular.
