Although our research questions aren\u2019t specific to the subject of the data, our search for and selection of a set to work still had parameters and goals.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p>Firstly, working within the time constraints of a single semester, we knew we were looking for a pre-existing dataset. Secondly, we were looking for a dataset that could be considered agnostic; although the neutrality of any dataset is debatable, our search was focused on finding material whose subject matter would not distract from or explicitly support the issues that were driving our experiments i.e. feminized labor, data science and literacy. Finally, we had a desire for our working dataset to have already been used for humanities research as a means to promote and comment on reproducibility in Digital Humanities and data science in general.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We attempted searches by source and by subject, looking far and wide at publicly available humanities data. This included: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/our-work\/listing?f%5B0%5D=content_type%3Aproject\">NEH-funded DH projects<\/a>, projects published in <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalhumanities.org\/dhq\/\">DH Quarterly<\/a> and other established journals, institutional\/academic Digital Humanities centers, <a href=\"http:\/\/humanitiesdata.com\">humanitiesdata.com<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/dhawards.org\/\">DH Awards<\/a>, repositories such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaggle.com\/\">Kaggle<\/a>, and an array of other data and digital project sources like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/\">Statista<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/\">github<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wikidata.org\/wiki\/Wikidata:Main_Page\">Wikidata<\/a>. In the end, we selected a dataset found via <a href=\"https:\/\/hcommons.org\/\">Humanities Commons<\/a>, a network of humanities researchers that hosts a repository of open-access materials.<\/p><p><br><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>There, we found <a href=\"https:\/\/hcommons.org\/deposits\/item\/hc:42511\/\">Desert Island Disks<\/a> (Finnegan et al., 2021) which builds on <a href=\"https:\/\/hcommons.org\/deposits\/item\/hc:37503\/\">Desert Island Discs<\/a> 1942-2020 (Gustar, 2020) which builds on <a href=\"https:\/\/hcommons.org\/deposits\/item\/hc:20545\/\">BBC Desert Island Discs Dataset v 1.0<\/a> (Morgan, 2018).<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif;font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );font-size: var(--global--font-size-base)\">&nbsp;The authors of each iteration published their dataset, some degree of analysis as well as the documentation of their digital process. The \u201cfirst Desert Island Discs was recorded in the BBC\u2019s bomb-damaged Maida Vale studio on 27th January 1942 and aired in the Forces Programme at 8pm two days later.
