However, New York City&#8217;s tree canopy is not evenly distributed, with some neighborhoods having more trees than others. For example, according to the 2015 Tree Census and the <a href=\"https:\/\/data.cityofnewyork.us\/Environment\/2015-Street-Tree-Census-Tree-Data\/uvpi-gqnh\/about_data\">2020 US Census<\/a>, Queens has the most street trees with 250,551 trees and a population of 2,405,464, while Brooklyn has 177,293 trees and a population of 2,736,074. For this data physicalization attempt, I used the data from the tree census and population data to create a physical object representing NYC\u2019s tree count per person by boroughs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Data<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I came across a post on Medium called <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@cc8170\/new-york-city-needs-more-trees-where-they-are-planted-matters-c5f8a989b46a\">New York City Needs More Trees. Where They Are Planted Matters<\/a> which included a data visualization showing NYC\u2019s calculated tree count per person by borough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfnBKU2C5kbjBTCBap9fzFWljwq-w-AI8Rej53Ggi9VqMFTjfIrtbfiJD49y949GQ5dv3HfIi1Bi3jun08oX8bjcd_9kk45n_NACRVo9Dq2QagJU1dTFXUL03tmi9mhgugdW-V1LT88AQsGtcrV8zihiZ9R?key=2E_I6OW2oXyy-4HjwLO7Lw\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, while I looked closer at the data provided by the author, I realized <strong>they made a mistake in the calculations<\/strong>. The \u2018Tree Count Per Person\u2019 column was calculated by <em>Population\/Tree Count<\/em> instead of <em>Tree Count\/Population<\/em>. So the data and the subsequent conclusions drawn in the medium article was actually inverted.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXf_TcDHS8rEDQrefdQi4-BRCxd6ZRPugcBNi1rKIxzpaTkxayHoG6xxETh2KVWGqfxrp02_FAuWS9r33-oLa2olkga06B9VvE_nXRkNRobYCJGTXjUEgxPlRu0b65wY4QaweHpZQDfHldjWLgmKJXwxzLzO?key=2E_I6OW2oXyy-4HjwLO7Lw\" width=\"624\" height=\"111\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After double checking the Tree Count and Population figures from the source, I re-calculated the Tree Count Per Person column and produced the following chart. This is the data I will be trying to represent with my physical object.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXe2fIfeolUJaI_VFq3v8HqdRHAkuHyIoi6cTt8Bs5iZYUKF3hbPDXRKfwf5EUOmBWDmXCa8vLi-dVBnvpfJhjFTGzSoJkuwV2trU0i7GK44_-ARv_MvbiGlucuvaaEkgtWz_K2pDllUEkomcIKyugr-ui7-?key=2E_I6OW2oXyy-4HjwLO7Lw\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Design + Ideation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While experimenting with different types of fabric in the course, I became interested in how fabric&#8217;s thread density and stretch can mirror density in a given data set. Each piece of fabric corresponds to one of the five boroughs\u2014Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. The first circular frame will act as labels and the second frame will act as a proportional representation of the boroughs\u2019 population. Each fabric piece was attached at specific points on the frame to reflect the proportion of trees per borough, with denser areas having less stretched fabric and areas with fewer trees displayed as more taut and thinly stretched.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mart\u00edn Soto Climent, Gossip \/ L\u2019adieu de l\u2019aube, 2022\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdcdP46OZmGiHR06Cyh584ogV0lFIYmjP27EqOKvcvmj_g5VzEy6-a3YFWSZDln8hx4NxbDykGDtsxGyyS4dHrPoAOLa4dFOcFpslbG9ABjuFUXIIKmwltN2MoLMvlG4G3FyTMvLgg1uBIaLnhr9JBrcWQ?key=2E_I6OW2oXyy-4HjwLO7Lw\" width=\"192\" height=\"239\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I first began with 2D drawings to lay out the basic design. Then, to better visualize the 3D aspects, I crafted a mock prototype using paper cutouts arranged to mimic the fabric layers. I began my ideation using the data directly from the medium article. Because of the article\u2019s miscalculation, I had thought that categorizing the data based on boroughs will be sufficient to show how tree canopy is unevenly distributed across NYC, since in the article, the wealthier Manhattan has a significantly higher tree count per person. However, halfway through my own calculations, I discovered that the data was actually inverted, and the actual representation by boroughs isn\u2019t all that indicative of the tree canopy inequality in the city.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A way to improve this will be to change the scale from boroughs to neighborhoods. When looking at the data a little more closely (for example, in this visualization of <a href=\"https:\/\/studentwork.prattsi.org\/infovis\/labs\/street-trees-per-capita-by-uhf-in-new-york\/\">street trees per capita by NYC neighborhoods<\/a>), it\u2019s easy to see how wealthier neighborhoods tend to be greener.
