Evolution Of Wearable Technology

Lab Reports, Timelines

INTRODUCTION

Human Computation Interaction is a young and emerging field in technology. During the emergence of the Human Computer Interaction it has been heavily influenced by science driven fields like computer engineering, psychological science and scientific discipline. Over the past few years it’s been remodeled from not simply science-influenced field however aesthetics influenced field still.

It is found that the concept of “accessory” is important in both fashion system and mobile design, but with different meanings. In fashion, an accessory like bag or scarf and garment work together to express your style and identity. Nowadays, wearable devices, such as smart watches, have gained increasing interests in academia and industry. Situating on human bodies requires wearable technology to be attractive and aesthetical. Then fashion studies could be very relevant and inspiring to the design of wearable devices. Making it as a fashion accessory is one way to make them aesthetical. The rise of wearable technology, from fitness trackers and the Apple Watch to Google Glass and Microsoft’s HoloLens, has been fueled by technology’s tendency to get faster and smaller at the same time. If we will take care of something, it’s that the long run means that we’ll be carrying our technology on the skin, and, maybe at some point, on the within, too.

The interest in both the fields made think of tracking this evolution of Wearable Technology. It made me think, what can be the future of this field ? Will the future generations will have technology embedded in body ?

MATERIALS

After I decided on what topic to work on, I googled the key words and browsed through the websites and images. During the start of the process I came on the site called VisualCapitalist where I got the knowledge of maximum of the milestones. Other resources I referred to are-

METHOD

The method I chose to make this timeline was an online tool called Timeline JS which helped me make an interactive timeline. This platform gives a Google Sheet in specific format. The format consisted of start and end date of the event, a banner image for the event, title and description. The sheet needs to be published on the web and the link needs to be uploaded on the Timeline JS website. The one thing I liked about this platform is the carousel of the events and the ability to change the font on the platform.

RESULTS

I designed the following interactive timeline of wearables with the help of Timeline JS

REFLECTION & FUTURE DIRECTION

The Timeline JS tool is perfect to narrate the history, story or development of a particular topic. I learned a lot from this process and as a future UX Designer it made me think about the development of the field in this particular sector.
